Chelsea Told To Come Up With An Offer Which Is ‘Up To Par’ After ‘First Advance’ For 65M Serie A Star Is Rejected

Chelsea have had an offer knocked back for Juventus centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, according to Tuttosport.

The Italian newspaper claims it was surprising that the “first advance” from an English club came from the Blues rather than Manchester United, but the bid did not match Juve’s asking price.

Barcelona also made an approach for de Ligt but both teams have been told to come up with an offer which is “up to par” or forget about signing the Netherlands international this summer.

Juventus signed the 21-year-old from Ajax for €75m (£65m) in 2019 but the Serie A club are coming under increasing financial strain and could be tempted to sell up if they receive a sufficiently high bid.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is after a new centre-back, with reports having linked the London club with the likes of Bayern Munich’s Niklas Sule, Paris Saint-Germain’s Marquinhos, Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic in recent weeks.
