Chelsea stumble through yet another managerial change as classy Conte is finally sacked

Well done Chelsea! Once again the club have demonstrated a remarkable lack of professionalism with their latest managerial changeover.

This time as the music played, Antonio Conte and Maurizio Sarri were the ones running round the chair. When the music eventually stopped after what seemed an interminable amount of time, it was Sarri who leapt into the seat leaving Conti to exit, stage left.

Chelsea were hoping to reach an agreement with their manager long before now and probably made a couple of offers to him to that end.

The problem was that Conte saw no reason why he shouldn’t be paid the final three years on his contract, (£9 million). After all, isn’t that what contracts are for.

Chelsea then decided to go down the route of Conte being in breach of his contract by falling out with the board, players, Diego Costa and anyone else they could think of. Again, Conte disagreed and held out for his full amount.

All of this was being argued OUT of court but will probably be settled IN court because, ultimately, it had reached the stage whereby Chelsea either had to sack their manager or leave him in charge. Leaving him in charge would have meant losing even more face than they have already lost by dragging things out this long.

So Conte is out and Sarri, having puffed his way through a few thousand cigarettes, is in.

Finally Chelsea can get down to the business of agreeing to their new manager’s requests without any more problems.

Or can they? They have signed Jorginho from Sarri’s old club Napoli and this business has also been conducted under a cloud.

Jorginho had a verbal agreement to go to Manchester City and a fee had been agreed with Napoli.

Bearing in mind that, despite the fact that Sarri had been fired by Napoli, he was still under contract to them and there was talk of £7 million in compensation having to be paid.

Where has that money gone? There was no mention of it when the manager was employed.

It would appear that Sarri quite liked the idea of Jorginho joining him at Stamford Bridge. It would also appear that, if that could be made to happen, then the £7 million could be included in the transfer fee.

Apparently, Jorginho’s agent was told by Napoli that his player had to sign for Chelsea or sit on the bench in Naples for the remaining two years of his contract. Jorginho is now a Chelsea player.

Now we have nothing against Maurizio Sarri or Jorginho. They are just doing what they think is the right thing to do. Napoli and Chelsea, however, appear to have behaved like something akin to a couple of snake oil salesman in the whole torrid affair.

As we tend not to watch Italian football, Napoli’s fate is not of our concern. As for Chelsea, everybody who isn’t a supporter will fervently hope they win nothing next year and finish well outside of the top six, never mind the top four, (relegation would be fitting but is unlikely).

With rivals Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool all looking solid after retaining their managers and being busy in the transfer market, Chelsea look like they have to play some serious catch-up while even Arsenal who appointed new boss Unai Emery this summer have also been very active in the transfer market so the next few weeks are going to have to be very productive down at Stamford Bridge.
