Chelsea Still Having Trouble Maintaining Their Form

The Blues lost to Stoke even though Schurrle scored twice and almost grabbed a hat-trick. According to Metro, Chelsea’s biggest problem is the way the defense performs. Cech is looking a little mediocre at the moment, Luiz is out of touch as far as the starting line-up goes and Cahill is not the most consistent of players. Terry is the only one holding the fort even though he is one of the oldest players currently included in Mourinho’s lot.

The Portuguese manager admitted once again his team has some issues. He feels that not enough players are standing out and exceeding expectations, as some of his current options are lacking defensive consistency. After Chelsea’s loss at the Britannia Stadium, Mourinho looked very angry especially when analyzing the way his defenders behaved. Set-pieces have become very dangerous for the Blues who once dominated this particular side of the game.

If Chelsea want to reach the final stages of the Champions League and catch up to Arsenal who are on top of the Premier League there is no doubt they have to work on their defensive concentration. There have been a lot of strange choices Mourinho made since the beginning of the season including that of leaving one of the best defenders in the world on the bench. David Luiz, who has been linked to several big clubs in European football over the summer, including Barcelona, decided to stay at Stamford Bridge in what most thought was going to be the season he became the Blues’s captain. Unfortunately for him, Chelsea’s boss has decided to give Cahill a chance to perform on a regular basis which was just as surprising as the whole Mata affair. The Spaniard who was one of the best Premier League players in 2012 was not included in the starting line-up for a couple of months from when the season began.

Fans are starting to wonder if Chelsea shouldn’t have directed their transfer budget towards someone other than the offensive players signed over the summer. Willian and Schurrle cost £50 million which was more than enough to bring in a strong defender like Marquinhos or Mamadou Sakho. Both are young, promising and have enough experience to perform for the Blues.
