Chelsea Star’s ‘England Place In Jeopardy’ After Starting Against Newcastle

Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell has a battle on his hands to win back the trust of England manager Gareth Southgate, according to the Daily Mail.

The 23-year-old had to be substituted after suffering a back spasm in the first half of the 2-0 defeat to Belgium but he has made a very quick recovery.

Chilwell started Chelsea’s game against Newcastle today and there is a feeling in the England camp that he could have played through the pain barrier and continued on against Belgium. The Mail suggest that he has put his “England place in jeopardy” as a consequence.

Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka took his place for the subsequent UEFA Nations League fixture against Iceland and it is believed the Gunners star, along with teammate Ainsley Maitland-Niles, are now strong contenders to take Chilwell’s place in the side.

Most Blues supporters, though, will be glad that the left-back prioritised his club by taking precautions and not risking his fitness whilst on international duty. The £50m signing had already missed the start of the season with a heel injury.
