Chelsea star ‘motivated’ for Wembley return after Community Shield blunder

Chelsea’s start to the season has been far from what they would have wanted and their problems all began in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal at Wembley, which the Gunners won on penalties after Alvaro Morata and Thibaut Courtois missed their spot-kicks.

The defending Premier League champions return to the home of English football later today to face Tottenham Hotspur, who are using Wembley as their home ground this season as they edge towards an exit from White Hart Lane, and Chelsea will be up for the occasion.

Spurs struggled at Wembley last season when they played their European matches at England’s home ground, suffering a premature exit from both the Champions League and Europa League, and Chelsea will look to take advantage of any struggles again in this afternoon’s crunch tie.

With an array of absentees, including the suspended Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas, Chelsea will need to find key-players capable of leading the team this weekend- and Spanish striker Alvaro Morata could be their man.

The former Real Madrid forward scored on his Premier League debut last weekend as Chelsea lost to Burnley, ensuring he maintains a fantastic record of scoring in his first appearances in English, Italian and Spanish football, and will hope to taste victory for the first-time with his new side today.

His penalty miss at Wembley a few weeks ago should drive him forward, with Morata admitting to Sky Sports he’s motivated following that failure.

“It is a big motivation for me, it is a bad place (Wembley) for me at the moment because I missed a penalty. But I have the opportunity to take this feeling out of my body, my head and all the heads of Chelsea supporters.”

“I am very motivated for this game, it is against Tottenham, a very big team. It is not good, I missed a penalty which was important for the team, for the club, it is a trophy, all week it is in my head and it is not good,”

“My feeling is I am new on this team, I am new in the Premier League, and it’s just the beginning for me. But I could only think about this thing – the penalty – it’s the mentality that is important.”

“I said to my wife, ‘this weekend I score a goal’, because I need to change the mentality, I need to turn the situation, to tell all the supporters that I am here and I am not scared to miss a penalty or to play badly.”

Morata came off the bench in the defeats to Arsenal and Burnley but is in-line to make his first start for the Blues today, with Chelsea desperate for his attacking prowess at the spearhead of their attack as they seek to bounce-back from their shock defeat a week ago.
