Chelsea star emerges as shock target for Barcelona

Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso has emerged as a shock target for La Liga giants Barcelona.

The Spaniard has established himself as one of the Blues’ key players since moving to Stamford Bridge from Fiorentina in 2016.

During his first season, Alonso helped his side win the Premier League in record fashion, and while Antonio Conte’s side have been unable to defend their crown this time around – Alonso has still enjoyed an impressive solo campaign.

The 27-year-old was named in the PFA Team of the Year last week.

And his performances over the last two years haven’t gone un-noticed.

According to Goal, his progress at Stamford Bridge has caught the attention of Barcelona, who are looking to bolster their defensive options in the summer.

The Catalonians are understood to see Alonso as a long-term replacement for Gerard Pique, who turns 32 early next year.

While naturally a left-back, Alonso has experience playing at centre half during his time in Italy.

Chelsea however are keen to hold on to the highly rated Spaniard, who was recently given his first call-up to the Spain national team, and could offer him a new contract in the summer to fend off interest from Barca.
