Chelsea set for two crucial additions that will pave the way for title defence

Chelsea stormed to Premier League glory last season but Antonio Conte has remained under pressure to improve his ranks this summer, particularly as the Blues lack significant depth in key-areas of their title winning side.

A return to the Champions League next season means that the West London giants will be significantly tested on their ability to play two games a week, which will stretch a side that has limited options in key areas.

The priority for Chelsea this window revolves around finding a top-class midfield partner for N’Golo Kante and securing the ideal striker to replace Diego Costa in the side, after the Spaniard revealed he’s been told he’s not in Conte’s plans for next season.

Strengthening both areas is sure to be expensive for the Blues and things have been relatively quiet on the transfer front so far this month. However, The IBTimes suggests that’s about to change with two mouth-watering additions.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku looks set to return to Stamford Bridge after informing the Toffees he wants to leave Goodison Park this summer for Champions League football, which Chelsea can offer, and a return to Chelsea has alway seemed likely as the Belgian previously claimed he had ‘unfinished business’ in West London.

Everton are demanding a ludicrous price for their star forward but Chelsea have the finances and the desire to complete a deal, whilst Conte won’t stop there as he’s pushing to complete a deal to bolster his midfield options swiftly.

Monaco’s Tiemoue Bakayoko is the man looking set to move to Stamford Bridge this summer, reportedly costing around £35m, and the Frenchman would be the perfect midfield partner for Kante- create a resilient duo that would be extremely difficult to break down.

This pair is likely to cost in excess of £100m but Chelsea will raise their finances with the likely sale of Diego Costa, whilst the likes of Nemanja Matic, Cesc Fabregas and Michy Batshuayi could also move away from the club.

Chelsea’s business is certainly not done with this pair though as the Blues need to bolster their options in central-defence and also need to provide competition to both Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso in the wing-back roles.

On top of this, a possible exit for Batshuayi means that Chelsea will need to find another striker in the market and the same can be said for the midfield, as losing Matic or Fabregas would leave Conte with few options in this area.
