Chelsea Seal Pre-Season With Win

According to Yahoo! Eurosport, Chelsea have completed their pre-season program with a spirited 2-1 victory against AS Roma, after Frank Lampard and Romelu Lukaku scored a goal each coming back from a goal down to the Italian giants to end their tour of the United States.

The Blues have been performing impressively over the past few weeks ever since Jose Mourinho took charge of the side for the second time in his career. The pre-season program began with a tour to South Asia, where they played and won all three matches with an astounding 13 goals scored in total. The group then traveled to the United States where they took part in the International Champions Cup which included teams from England, Spain and Italy. Chelsea began victoriously beating Inter Milan 2-0, and continued their perfect run when they beat AC Milan with the same scoreline to qualify for the final. The final saw them face Mourinho’s former club Real Madrid, and they were soundly beaten 3-1 thanks to brace from Cristiano Ronaldo. Their final friendly encounter in the United States was to be played this weekend against Roma in Washington D.C.

Mourinho certainly did his bit to clear speculation about David Luiz’s future at the club by starting with the Brazilian center back, who partnered John Terry in defence. New signing Mark Schwarzer took his place in goal, and was joined by another summer arrival in Andre Schurrle who partnered Fernando Torres in attack. The match began poorly for the Blues, after Schwarezer’s error gave Roma the lead in the 20th minute with Eric Lamela giving the Italians the lead till half time. The second half began with changes both both sides, and it was a substitute in Lampard who brought Chelsea back on level terms on the 60th minute with a crisp finish. Another substitute in Lukaku gave the Blues a win in the 88th minute when Eden Hazard created an opportunity which eventually fell to his compatriot striker who won it for Mourinho’s side. Only a week of international friendlies now separate Chelsea from the start of the new Barclays Premier League campaign.
