Chelsea Progress On Striker Deal

The fact that the Blues are looking to increase their attacking options upfront for the next season is well known, but a move for the German striker Andre Schurrle, currently plying his trade in the Bundesliga, would not have been predicted by many Chelsea fans.

The mega-rich club, bankrolled by their wealthy owner Roman Abramovich, have been widely linked with a big money move for the likes of Radamel Falcao, Mario Gomez and Neymar amongst others. However, the London outfit are instead close to signing Leverkusen’s Schurrle, who has bagged an impressive 7 goals in 22 appearances for the German national team.

In fact, the Blues had wanted to sign the 22-year-old last summer, but couldn’t agree a deal with the German outfit for their star asset. However, Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit of landing the striker and a deal to bring the hitman to Stamford Bridge next summer looks increasingly likely.

Chelsea’s two most recognized strikers, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba, have failed to score more 10 Premier League goals between them, which is poor even though Ba joined the Blues in January from Newcastle United. They have had to rely on goals from midfield, with Mata and Hazard scoring 18 league goals for the reigning Champions League winners.

With Chelsea wanting to bring in more strikers for the next season, it seems that Torres’ time at the Bridge could be drawing to a close. The £50 million signing has failed to recreate his Liverpool form and is widely expected to be sold in the summer to make way for new additions, although him featuring in the recent Adidas kit promo suggests that Torres is a part of Chelsea’s future plans.

The person who could replace Torres is the German Schurrle, who has scored 14 league goals in 39 appearances for Leverkusen. The forward is highly-rated in his homeland and since Chelsea admire him, they are ready to offer more than £25 million for his services.

And according to Metro, Leverkusen’s director of sport has admitted that the German club have held talks with Chelsea over a possible transfer of Schurrle. He said, “Yes, I was in London and we have held talks. There is nothing more to say. Nothing has been decided as yet.”
