Chelsea Players Celebrate At Awards Night

Chelsea have had an incredible week in their season, which ended by the stars winning the annual awards at the club in a celebrity studded event in the heart of London, to honor the efforts of players this season in the form of awards.

Before the week, the club were neither certain of UEFA Champions League qualification, nor the stay of one of their most influential stars, Frank Lampard. But a week can make all the difference.

The Blues started off away at Aston Villa, where they won against an opposition fighting for survival, an achievement to say the least considering the pressure asserted by the home side.  This win included an incredible brace from Lampard, which made him the club’s highest ever goalscorer with 203 goals in 607 appearances in all competitions. Then, the club were led by Lampard in the UEFA Europa League final against Portuguese side Benfica at Amsterdam. Interim manager Rafa Benitez’s side emerged victorious, winning their second European crown in two consecutive seasons, to the delight of the fans and owner Roman Abramovich.

A day after the win against Benfica, Chelsea confirmed that Lampard had signed a one-year extension to his current deal, to the sheer delight of the supporters and the players at the club.

The week finally ended when the players were awarded for their efforts at a glamorous event in London. Juan Mata, who has been one of the most influential midfielders in the Barclays Premier League, never-mind Chelsea, won the award for the Player of the Season, and the Players’ Player of the Season award, which recognizes the respect he commands from his fellow players on and off the field.

Brazilian attacker Oscar, who played his first full season at the club since his summer move from native club Internacional, won the award for the Goal of the Season for his terrific long range effort to beat world-class Juventus goalkeeper Buffon.

The night could not have been complete without an award for Lampard, who received the Special Recognition award for his continual efforts for Chelsea.

The icing on the cake for Chelsea fans would be the confirmation that Jose Mourinho is in line to become the manager next season, as the supporters would expect the glory days to return to Stamford Bridge and this does seem more likely with the announcement tonight from Real Madrid that Mourinho will be leaving the Santiago Bernabeu.
