Chelsea Outcasts Give Mourinho Selection Dilemma

As reported in ESPN, Chelsea defeated Swindon Town on Tuesday night to go through to the next round of the Capital One Cup, after first half goals from Fernando Torres and Ramires were enough to give Jose Mourinho’s men a comfortable victory away from home.

Mourinho is facing the criticism of certain pundits, but to give the ‘Special One’ the benefit of the doubt, he has been insisting on the fact that even though expectations from him were high, success and trophies would not be a certainty in his first season back at Stamford Bridge. The former Real Madrid manager also made some crucial decisions at the end of this past summer’s transfer window, allowing star striker Romelu Lukaku and talented attacker Victor Moses to leave for Everton and Liverpool on a season long loan for both players. The Blues are recovering from a rocky start to the Barclays Premier League campaign, with the weekend’s 2-0 win against Fulham recovering the wounds from last week’s defeat at the hands of Everton.

Chelsea faced Swindon in the third round of the Capital One Cup at the County Ground. Mourinho did not leave any stone unturned, as he sent out a strong side with most of the summer signings appearing in action. This was a strong opportunity for the likes of Juan Mata, who has been in the shadows of a regular starting eleven spot, to impress the Chelsea officials and prove his skills to Mourinho. Marco van Ginkel and Willian both started for the Blues, with Fernando Torres being assisted by Kevin de Bruyne in attack. One man who must be disappointed not to get a start would be Demba Ba, who has been sinking down the pecking order, especially with the arrival of Samuel Eto’o.

Mark Schwarzer was sturdy in goal, and Torres gave the visitors the lead in the 29th minute with a simple finish to open his goal account for the season with a tap in of the rebound of Mata’s shot which was well saved by the Swindon keeper. A few minutes later, Torres was involved again, as he provided Ramires with the opportunity to put the Blues two goals to the good, and the Brazilian obliged, sending his side into the fourth round.
