Chelsea Outcast Looks Set For Surprise Comeback In Lampard’s First Match As Manager

Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater will feature in tonight’s pre-season friendly match against Bohemians, according to reports in the English media.

The 29-year-old has not featured for the Blues since the Community Shield in August last year after being frozen out by boss Maurizio Sarri.

New manager Frank Lampard is, however, keen to give every player in the first team their opportunity to shine, and will give Drinkwater his chance this evening.

The midfielder has made just 23 appearances since his £35m move from Leicester City in 2017, with off the field problems also contributing to his lack of game time.

In addition to Drinkwater, a number of other fringe players, including Michy Batshuayi, will get their chance tonight, while some first-team regulars, including captain Cesar Azpilicueta and Pedro, will also feature.

Lampard is still well short of having a fully available squad, though, with many players taking holiday following international football over the summer.
