Shearer Criticises Chelsea Star Who Looked “Unsure What To Do” Against Brentford

BBC pundit Alan Shearer was not impressed with the performance of Nicolas Jackson in Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Brentford at the weekend.

The Premier League’s all-time leading scorer criticised the striker’s lack of movement and he felt the Senegalese international needs to get himself into positions where he is likely to score more goals:

“They were never ever going to score today Chelsea. To be more prolific you have to get yourself into scoring positions. There was a complete lack of movement from him [Jackson] today. He looks very raw and at times unsure what to do.”

“You’ve got to make defenders work. Goalscorers don’t hang around on the edge of the box like he does. It’s his job to get on the end of it.”

Jackson is feeling the pressure

It was always a big ask for the 22-year-old to be the Blues’ main striker this season. He lacks experience at the highest level and he had not been a regular scorer in senior football, up until a hot streak for Villarreal at the end of last season.

Jackson is clearly under a lot of strain to perform, and that was demonstrated when manager Mauricio Pochettino revealed that the forward did not take too kindly to some mild criticism from a fan during the loss to Brentford. The Chelsea boss claims the forward “took it in a bad way”.

Chelsea will have to wait a couple of months to add more firepower

While it should have been obvious in the summer that the London club were light up front, the lack of goals in the first 10 games has reinforced the need to bring in another striker.

Of course, with the transfer window not open until January, Pochettino will have to make do with what he has got until then, with the hope that Jackson can find some consistency in the meantime.
