Paul Merson Makes “Relegation Battle” Claim As He Predicts The Score Between Chelsea And Sheffield United

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson says Chelsea could be in a “relegation battle” if they don’t beat Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge this weekend.

While he does expect the Blues to come out on top, Merson claims performances this season suggest that the London club will need to go back into the transfer market next month:

“If Chelsea lose this game, you seriously have to sit there and wonder if they are in a relegation battle. They have a big cup game against Newcastle United coming up, but before that, they have to put this one to bed and secure all three points…”

“If they want to progress as a club, they need better players, so it’ll be interesting to see what they do in the January transfer window. Something’s got to give for Mauricio Pochettino and his side, as they’re playing at home, I’m backing them to win.”

Merson has gone with a 2-0 victory to Chelsea, which seems like a fair prediction when you consider their opponent’s away record.

Sheffield United have secured just 1 point on the road

The Blades have been woeful away from Bramall Lane this season, having picked up a solitary draw and lost their 6 other fixtures.

That point came against Brighton when the Seagulls were down to 10 men. They have also conceded 20 goals, which is the joint most of any team in the Premier League away from home.

Could Chelsea be dragged into a relegation battle?

It’s fair to say that Merson is exaggerating somewhat. Pochettino’s men are currently 10 points above the bottom three.

Even so, their results in the calendar year are the worst of any team, which is a damning indictment of the lack of progress we have seen. A convincing win on Saturday afternoon is very much needed to get back on track heading into the festive period.
