Chelsea are keen to offer a new contract to Moises Caicedo, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Speaking on his ‘Here We Go’ podcast, Romano said that the Blues have been delighted with the Ecuadorian’s performances, but they have also been impressed with the example he sets for others in the first-team squad:
“I’m told that Chelsea want to negotiate and to advance a new contract for Moises Caicedo… Chelsea are very happy with him. They invested big money, of course, but Chelsea believe it was very well spent.”
“They like the leadership. They like the skills. They like the behaviour of Moises Caicedo. Chelsea believe that Moises Caicedo is setting the example for young players for the future… Chelsea want to extend his contract and want to give him what he deserves.”
Chelsea have the player tied down for 6 more years
When they paid Brighton £115m for the midfielder in 2023, he signed a contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2031. There is also an option for another year.
Considering the length of time remaining, it appears a new deal won’t be focused on an extension necessarily, but on rewarding Caicedo with an increased salary. He is taking home roughly £150,000 a week at the moment.
Caicedo has had a superb start to the season
The 23-year-old has made the most tackles (16) and the most interceptions (12) of any player in the Premier League so far this campaign.
Caicedo has played the full 90 minutes in all four of Chelsea’s games, which demonstrates how important he is to head coach Enzo Maresca.
He has been getting on the scoresheet too, with his superb strike during the 2-2 draw against Brentford on Saturday, having followed up his goal versus West Ham last month.
