Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has lavished praise on Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo following his performance against Liverpool at the weekend.
The 23-year-old opened the scoring with a spectacular long-range effort during the 2-1 victory, and Redknapp claims it is an aspect of his game which makes him superior to the likes of former Ballon d’Or winner Rodri:
“Normally, a number 6 doesn’t have this quality. You talk about him, Rodri, Gravenberch – those three are as good as anything in world football.”
“He possesses so many good attributes. When he hasn’t got the ball he’s incredible, he’s so hard to play against. He can pass the ball, he plays round the corner. There’s nothing he can’t do, there’s not a weakness in his game.”
It is looking like £115m well spent
After the Ecuadorian struggled during his first season at Stamford Bridge, many questioned whether the Blues had signed a dud.
However, over the past 18 months, Caicedo has blossomed into the player that many fans hoped he would be after arriving from Brighton for what was a British record fee at the time.
His speed, dynamism, and work ethic, combined with his ability in possession, make him the perfect no.6.
Caicedo and Chelsea need to build on the Liverpool win
In some ways, it is somewhat disappointing that the victory over the Premier League champions came just before an international break.
After an inconsistent start to the season, peppered by red cards, the three points at the weekend could be a springboard for better things to come.
We shall have to wait and see whether the momentum can be carried into Chelsea’s next game against Nottingham Forest, but it is a performance that players and fans can take a lot of heart from.
