Ex-Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit believes his former club should appoint Jose Mourinho as manager for a third time.
Current head coach Mauricio Pochettino is under massive pressure following some poor recent results, and Petit told Compare.bet that Mourinho (with club legend John Terry at his side) could get the most out of the current squad:
“I’ve seen the speculation that Mourinho could come in with John Terry as his assistant. When you think about it, it could be something interesting. He would give the team character and personality.”
“At the moment they are a broken team and he could be the man to come in and fix it. I actually think they need a manager who will have a proper vision of what needs to be done with the players that are there.”
Mourinho is currently available
If Chelsea’s form deteriorates further under Pochettino, Chelsea’s owners may have no choice but to part ways with the Argentinian before the end of the season, as they did with Graham Potter.
One of the main issues, though, is the club don’t have a succession plan in place so they would likely be looking for a manager who is ready to take the reins straight away.
Mourinho was sacked by Roma last month so he is available to take up the position. Having won the title three times with the Blues, he would be a safe pair of hands but he would probably want to be more than an interim manager.
Who is favourite to be the next Chelsea manager if Pochettino is sacked?
Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi is currently the bookies’ favourite, with Girona head coach Michel among the contenders, along with Mourinho.
The likes of Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim and Zinedine Zidane are other names that are in the frame.
