Lawrenson Claims Chelsea Star’s Form Is Fueled By Determination To “Get One Over” His Former Manager

Jadon Sancho will be extra determined to get back to his best at Chelsea to prove Erik ten Hag wrong, according to Mark Lawrenson.

Speaking to Paddy Power, the former defender suggested that Sancho’s falling out with his former manager may be used to fuel his improved performances:

“Jadon Sancho can get back to his best at Chelsea, especially with the way the team are playing currently. Also, Jadon will have extra motivation of wanting to get one over on Erik ten Hag, considering he didn’t want him at Manchester United.”

It should be pointed out that Sancho is still technically on loan from Manchester United but he will seal a permanent move at the end of the season.

The Blues are only expected to pay between £20m and £25m for the player which could prove to be a bargain based on his early form.

How do Sancho’s Chelsea’s performances compare to his time at United?

The stats show that the 24-year-old has upped his game considerably since his arrival at Stamford Bridge.

Sancho is averaging more goals and assists (1.04 per 90) than he did during his first two seasons with United (0.38 per 90). He is also averaging more goal-creating actions, more successful take-ons and more key passes.

It’s best not to get too carried away

While Sancho has made an excellent start, it remains to be seen whether he can maintain this level over the long term.

A lot may hinge on how head coach Enzo Maresca handles the player. He is clearly someone who needs an arm around his shoulder. At Old Trafford, ten Hag used the ‘tough love’ approach and it didn’t pay off.

Sancho possesses a lot of talent and if Maresca can unlock it, he will end up being an excellent signing for the Blues.
