The Magpies do have plenty of financial resources due to the Saudi Public Investment Fund but the Premier League’s PSR rules limit how much they can do in the transfer market.

They have splashed out £55m on Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga but that deal will hardly transform Eddie Howe’s side from top 5 contenders to title challengers.

As expected, they are rank outsiders for 1st place at the moment, and they would need to make some bold decisions to be seriously considered.

With Champions League football to contend with too, there are also questions about how it could impact their league form.
