Chelsea New Owner’s In Tray: The FIVE BIG Issues That Have To Be Solved Once The Takeover Is Complete

Chelsea are now expected to have a new owner by the end of April if the takeover process, overseen by merchant bank the Raine Group, goes to plan.

There are four bidders: the Boehley/Wyss Consortium, the Ricketts family, the Martin Broughton Consortium and Stephen Pagliuca.

Whoever wins, there are a number of issues, both short and long-term, that they will have to resolve when they take up ownership of the Blues.

Press the next page as we go through the new owner’s in-tray:

1) Contracts

Everyone knows the situations surrounding Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen but, while sorting out the future of those three players is the priority, there are other contracts that need to be addressed soon.

N’Golo Kante and Jorginho both have deals that expire in 2023, so negotiations with the pair will have to start soon or the club risk losing them on free transfers.

2) Tuchel’s Future

The German has been a superb leader during a crisis situation and the new owner will have to convince the manager that he has the ambition to take the club forward in the long term.

Tuchel’s contract expires in 2024 and, even though there is no real need to negotiate an extension, it would reinforce his commitment to the club if a new deal can be agreed.

3) Summer Transfer Plans

There are players like Timo Werner who are pushing to leave Stamford Bridge but the main focus for the new owner will be to give Tuchel the squad he needs to fight on all fronts next campaign.

Depending on whether the likes of Azpilicueta and Rudiger stay, one or more centre-backs will have to be signed. Another wingback wouldn’t go amiss either, while a new midfielder, as well as a striker, could also be considered.

4) Academy and Loanees

Levi Colwill, Armando Broja and Conor Gallagher, in particular, have thrived whilst out on loan, and it will be interesting to see what the future holds for them. Will they stay and be given new contracts, or will one or two be offloaded?

The academy has produced so many talented young players in recent years, and a renewed commitment to Cobham is needed to guarantee Chelsea’s future over the long term.

5) The Stadium

It has been reported that Raine Group have been asking potential bidders to guarantee at least £1billion to go towards the development of the stadium.

For the growth of Chelsea, a decision needs to be made on whether Stamford Bridge can be upgraded or a purpose-built new ground is required.
