Chelsea need at least two signings before the transfer window shuts

Chelsea’s summer has been a rollercoaster ride and their start to their Premier League title defence has been similarly rocky, with the Blues falling to defeat on the opening weekend against Burnley but responding with victories over Tottenham Hotspur and Everton.

New signings Alvaro Morata and Tiemoue Bakayoko have started to impress at Stamford Bridge, but there’s certainly more to come, and fans will hope that defensive addition Antonio Rudiger also shines in the months ahead.

However, as we edge towards Chelsea’s return to European action with the Champions League’s return after the international break, Antonio Conte’s squad still lacks depth in key areas and further signings are needed.

The Blues face an extremely difficult task in their return to Europe’s elite competition as last week’s draw handed the Premier League champions a nightmare group, which sees Conte’s side face off against Qarabag, Atletico Madrid and Roma.

Chelsea’s clashes against Atletico and Roma will be crucial in the Blues’ attempts to advance to the knock-out stages of the Champions League and to do so they’ll need significant upgrades to their squad depth, which puts Conte under pressure.

The Blues need at least two more signings before the transfer window slams shut on Thursday evening, consisting of a central-midfielder and a right wing-back; to provide competition and depth in key areas.

Leicester City’s Danny Drinkwater looks likely to arrive and bolster Chelsea’s options in the middle of the park but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s snub, which leaves the Arsenal man likely to join Liverpool, means Chelsea don’t really have any options to provide depth on the right-side.

Victor Moses shone in that position last season but playing in a major European competition is a major step-up for the Nigerian and there’s a risk that he could struggle, whilst there’s also the chance of injury or suspension woes.

Without further names, Chelsea could find their attempts to excel in Europe left in tatters and their Premier League title defence could suffer as a result. In any case, it’s set to be an extremely busy and testing few days for Antonio Conte.
