Chelsea must guard record-breaking striker closely this summer

Chelsea’s success in the Premier League this season has been well documented and the Blues could secure a double later this month, as Antonio Conte’s side are due to tackle London rivals Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

Away from Stamford Bridge, Conte’s side have a wealth of young talents out on-loan, an approach which has been widely criticised, but it’s certainly been a successful year for Blues striker Tammy Abraham- who has excelled with Bristol City.

With the lowly-Championship outfit, who finished just three points above the relegation zone, Abraham has made a real impression by scoring 23 goals; almost half of the 60 goals that the Robins scored this season.

The 19-year-old secured all three major club awards at Bristol City’s end of season celebrations and set a new record in the process, becoming the highest-scoring teenager during the last two decades of the modern era of football’s second-tier.

However, questions will be raised as to whether Abraham can kick-on and become an asset for Chelsea’s first-team as the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Romelu Lukaku have impressed in loan spells previously but never got their opportunity in West London.

Abraham is unlikely to stay at Chelsea next season, as the Blues are seeking a top-class striker to replace Diego Costa and also have Michy Batshuayi in the ranks, but that doesn’t mean that Abraham doesn’t have a future with Chelsea.

Turning 20 in October, Abraham has plenty of years ahead of him and the next stage for his development is another loan spell, either sending him to a Championship side that’s fighting for promotion or moving to a Premier League side, with the latter being the most likely option.

Abraham has plenty of challenges ahead of him as succeeding in the Premier League is a lot more difficult to enjoying success in the second-tier and there has been a lot of players who have struggled with the differences in playing style.

That’s why the best approach may be for Abraham to return to the Championship next season, where he can find consistency in the league once again before returning to Chelsea in the summer of 2018- and a season training with Antonio Conte’s first-team could be ideal.

With Abraham’s tremendous record, it’s clear that Chelsea have a potential homegrown hero amongst their ranks but he must be protected as one wrong decision on his development could bring the house of cards tumbling down.

The teenager would have a wealth of expectation on his shoulders if he was to move to a Premier League side next season and that could be too much for him, especially as a move would likely see him more to a relegation-threatened side.

England’s top-flight is a cut-throat business and Abraham would have to find his feet quickly, which may be too big of an ask. Chelsea could even send him out on-loan to the Championship for the first-half of the season and then to a Premier League side in the second-half of the campaign, should they wish.

What’s clear though is that an immediate Premier League loan would be the wrong decision and Abraham needs stability to fulfil his true potential.
