REPORT: Chelsea Could Make Shocking Transfer Swoop For International Superstar With Liverpool And Arsenal Also Interested

Chelsea could shock the world by securing a loan deal for PSG’s Kylian Mbappe, according to journalist Luke Edwards [via BBC Sport].

Should Chelsea opt to make a move for the World Cup winner, he would cost £20 million – and this would just be for a single year. For a player of Mbappe’s calibre, however, it would nit be surprising to see the Blues accept this deal.

Of course, Chelsea are not the only club who have been linked with a move for Mbappe this summer. Real Madrid appear to be his preferred destination, with Liverpool, Arsenal and a collection of clubs in Saudi Arabia also registering an interest in the player.

Manchester United and Manchester City have also been linked with Mbappe. United could be in contention for his signature, but it seems unlikely that City will make a move, given the presence of Erling Haaland.

What did Luke Edwards have to say regarding Mbappe?

Speaking to the Transfer Gossip Daily podcast on BBC Sport, Edwards said: “It’s a bit like a holiday romance. Fleeting, probably not good for him – but who wouldn’t take Mbappe for a year? PSG do not want him hanging around after he burned all his bridges there, but he’s one of the best players in the world.

“Chelsea fans would be really excited about it. Clearly, he wants Real Madrid and PSG would want a large loan fee. Would Chelsea pay £20m to take Mbappe on loan for one season? It’s a signing that makes sense in this crazy world of football transfers.”

Where would Mbappe fit into Mauricio Pochettino’s system at Chelsea?

Currently, it is unclear how Pochettino’s Chelsea will line up, as he has yet to take charge of them in a competitive capacity. Nevertheless, it can be assumed that he will play a 4-3-3 formation – it is what he played whilst he was manager of both Tottenham Hotspur and PSG.

While at PSG, Mbappe generally played as a striker under the Argentinian. As such, he could be a brilliant answer to Chelsea’s centre-forward woes.

However, for all of his many, many qualities, Mbappe is not the physically strongest of footballers. Additionally, at 5ft 10, he isn’t particularly tall, either.

As such, it would not be a surprise to see Mbappe played out on the right wing, instead. Chelsea have far more quality wingers than they do strikers – but none of them are even close to the Frenchman’s level of quality.
