Chelsea Linked With Shock Move To Appoint 50 Year Old Manager Who Has A 25% Win Ratio In The Premier League

Chelsea have considered the possibility of appointing ex-Leeds manager Jesse Marsch as an interim head coach, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

Writing on his Substack page, Phillips said that the 50-year-old is “one name” who is being looked at if the Blues decide to sack Mauricio Pochettino before the end of the season.

Marsch has not been in management since being sacked by Leeds in February last year. He lasted barely a year at Elland Road, with the Whites being relegated from the top flight after his departure.

During his time at Leeds, he won just 8 of his 32 Premier League matches in charge, giving him a 25% win ratio; a statistic that will seriously concern Chelsea supporters.

Why are Chelsea considering Marsch as an option?

The American is a very attack-minded coach and his principles are based on those that govern the philosophy of the Red Bull group of clubs. He has previously managed their three biggest teams; New York Red Bulls, Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig.

Marsch’s most successful period was during his spell with Salzburg, where he won the Austrian Bundesliga and the Austrian Cup on two occasions. However, he did struggle at Leipzig, where he lasted just 21 games before being forced out.

Will Pochettino leave Stamford Bridge?

While it appears as if the Blues are drawing up a list of replacements for Pochettino, it is still not 100% guaranteed that the Argentinian will part ways with the London club.

It is believed that the board want to give Pochettino a chance to turn things around. European qualification is reportedly the minimum requirement though and, based on the club’s inconsistent form, that doesn’t look likely at the moment.

If Pochettino is sacked, fans will almost certainly want a better option than Marsch to succeed him in the dugout, even on an interim basis.
