Chelsea, Tottenham and a number of other clubs have made “tentative enquiries” for Newcastle’s pacey winger Allan Saint-Maximin this summer, according to The Athletic.

Intermediaries were reportedly used to ascertain the Frenchman’s availability, with the hope being that he would be sold for a “knockdown price” with Newcastle keen to revamp their squad.

However, it is believed the Magpies told potential suitors, including Chelsea, that they wouldn’t sell Saint-Maximin unless an offer “well in excess” of £40m was made.

Blues boss Thomas Tuchel has been keen to add pace to his attack and Saint-Maximin would certainly have fit the profile. They have already brought in Raheem Sterling from Manchester City so it is not known whether the enquiry was made before they decided to sign the England international.

Whatever the case may be, it appears that Chelsea have cooled their interest in Saint-Maximin, although a move for another winger can’t be ruled out.
