Chelsea Lose Another Strike Target?

According to the Daily Star, Chelsea are set to lose their January transfer target Jackson Martinez, after reports emerging from Portugal suggest the striker is about to sign a new contract with FC Porto to avoid any possible move away from the club.

Chelsea began their shopping in the transfer market earlier than most clubs by securing the signature of former Benfica midfielder Nemanja Matic, who has rejoined at Stamford Bridge. However, the Blues have since lost two targets due to unfortunate injuries that have averted the possibility of a transfer. The club showed concrete interest in Paris Saint Germain star Adrien Rabiot, but the Frenchman sustained an injury to rule out a transfer. Another player that the club have lost through injury is Monaco striker Radamel Falcao, who sustained a heavy injury this week in the French League Cup.

Having lost two attackers through injury, Martinez’s new contract will come as another blow in Mourinho’s attempt to bolster the Chelsea attack. With Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o as the only two recognizable strikers, Mourinho will have to decide quick on an alternate option with just 7 days to go in the transfer window. Also, Juan Mata’s potential £37 million transfer to Manchester United will leave the squad thin if the club do not manage to sign an additional striker. Although they are close to finishing the deal to sign winger Mohamed Salah from FC Basel for about £11m.

Martinez has been on the Chelsea radar for the past few seasons, but the striker is content with a place in the Porto squad. The 27-year old has played a total of 30 matches for the Portuguese side, with 19 goals this season.
