Chelsea Looking To End Season On A High

The Blues are still recovering from their last gasp Europa League victory against Benfica in midweek, which got them their first and last silverware for the season, thanks to an injury time header from defender Branislav Ivanovic. Now, they will be looking to carry on that momentum and end the current season on a high against the Toffees at Chelsea’s home ground.

Chelsea are already assured of their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, and currently occupy the third spot in the league table which is however still up for grabs. A 0-0 or 1-1 draw today coupled with a 2-1 or 3-2 victory for Arsenal against Newcastle United will see us witness the first of its kind play-off for 3rd spot on the 26th of May as Chelsea and Arsenal will astonishingly be on the same level on points, goal difference and on goals scored.

With the Blues already having played way too many games this season, they will be eager to avoid another grueling fixture against their London rivals. Also, the unexpected added fixture could interfere with the England national team’s preparations for the friendlies scheduled on the 29th of May against the Republic of Ireland and on the 2nd of June against Brazil.

Thus, Chelsea will be eyeing a victory today and sealing the third spot once and for all. The match will also be interim manager Rafael Benitez’s final game in-charge of Chelsea before he leaves the club according to the initial agreement. Speaking of ending ties, the game will also mark David Moyes’ last match as Everton boss, as he will become the manager of Manchester United from July 1st. Everton captain, Phil Neville, too will hang up his boots after today’s game.

This game is certain to be one filled with emotions for both the teams, who will both want to give their respective managers and captain a fitting farewell. Which of these teams do you think will knick this one today? Or else, will we see a draw and then witness an exciting one-off game between Arsenal and Chelsea for the 3rd spot?
