Chelsea Keep Third Place After An Impressive Performance Against Liverpool

Mourinho knew he had to win against Liverpool in order to keep up with Arsenal and City. The Gunners won earlier against Newcastle and finish 2013 first in the Premier League standings.

Chelsea had to come back from 1-0 after conceding an early goal scored by Skrtel. Suarez was blocked after Coutinho’s free kick found him in the Blues’ box. His header was deflected and ended up in front of the goal, leaving Liverpool’s defender the opportunity to score one of the easiest goals of his career.

Mourinho’s side responded well and Hazard nearly found the net just 1 minute after Liverpool took the lead. Hazard who looks better on the pitch with every match was denied by Skrtel and Johnson.

The Belgian international was the star of the game. With 10 minutes gone he was brought down by Lucas inside Liverpool’s box but Webb did not point towards the penalty spot. Mignolet looked in decent shape after managing some amazing saves.

Hazard then scored a beautiful equalising goal in the 18th minute. He curled it in the right upper corner, right near the post, from just outside the box.

Ashley Cole had to come on for Ivanovic who picked up an injury. With 10 minutes to go to half-time Eto’o probably got his most important goal of the season up until now. Oscar was the one with the assist who found the Cameroonian 3 feet away from the goal line.

The second half started with Liverpool trying to get the equalizer. Sakho hit the post and Suarez was denied by Cech. Eto’o could have scored his second goal but was denied by Mignolet.

Liverpool were denied a penalty shot after Suarez got blocked by Eto’o inside the box. Webb did not even flinch despite having a clear view of what happened. The game ended in an important win for the Blues who stay only 2 points behind Arsenal in this crazy season.
