Chelsea are targeting Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey, according to Todofichajes.com. The Spanish website believes the Blues are looking to sign a player that fits the Ghanaian’s profile and they are prepared to pull out all the stops to sign him this summer.
Atletico’s response has reportedly been to reopen negotiations over a new contract. The 26-year-old is said to have a low release clause, and the main goal of talks will likely be to raise the buyout fee in order to ward off interest in the player.
Thomas has also been linked with Arsenal in recent days and it does look as though there will be a battle for the holding midfielder at the end of the season.
Whether Chelsea genuinely need another defensive midfield player, it is up for debate. N’Golo Kante has had his injury problems this season, but the likes of Jorginho, Billy Gilmour and Mateo Kovacic can also play in the deep-lying midfield role.
