Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Moises Caicedo sustained an ankle injury during the closing stages of the 2-0 win over Fluminense on Tuesday night.
Speaking after the game, Maresca said that he didn’t want the Ecuadorian international to risk his fitness ahead of the Club World Cup final this weekend:
“Moi twisted his ankle. When it happened, I told him, because there were just two or three minutes to go, that we could finish with 10 players. It’s important that we don’t get too worked up because we have a game on Sunday.
“He said he would try, but he felt pain. So, hopefully, he can be fit for Sunday.”
Will Caicedo start the final?
At the moment, it is difficult to tell. A twisted ankle normally means a player is sidelined for at least a few weeks.
However, a lot depends on the severity of the pain. There is a chance that he could be risked for the final, knowing that he will have an extended period of rest following the tournament.
The latest Chelsea injury news
Benoit Badiashile came off injured during the 4-1 win over Benfica in the last 16 and the centre-back is not expected to play again during the competition.
Romeo Lavia has a minor muscular problem, which has kept him from making the matchday squad since the victory against Benfica. He is taking part in individual training drills, but he remains a doubt for Sunday’s final.
Reece James picked up a knock in the warm-up before the quarter-final tie versus Palmeiras but he was fit enough to play the final 20 minutes versus Fluminense after coming as a substitute for Malo Gusto. He is in contention to start this weekend if Maresca decides to pick him.
