Chelsea In Queue For Dutch Starlet

Chelsea are chasing the signature of Dutch youngster Marco van Ginkel who plays for local side Vitesse, but according to the player’s agent, the Blues are one of many clubs who are in line to sign up the impressive midfielder.

Van Ginkel, who is a regular in the Vitesse, has been rated highly not only in Netherlands, but also all over Europe, as clubs line up to lure the potential star away. But it will not be an easy task to lure a player who has played his entire career at one club. At the tender age of 20, shifting from the Dutch league to the Barclays Premier League would be quite a transition for the youngster, and would take time to settle into the intense nature of the English game.

The Dutch Under-21 international started his career at the age of seven, when he joined the youth academy at Vitesse. The player’s skills were enhanced at the academy, and the officials immediately recognized signs of a potential star. Vitesse kept van Ginkel at the club through his teens, and offered him his first professional contract in 2010, more than a decade after he arrived at the club. van Ginkel readily accepted the offer, and has never looked back since. Having started by playing just 4 matches in the 2009/2010 season, he impressed the coaches, and earned 33 appearances this past season, scoring an impressive 8 goals.

The midfielder is not only attracting eyes due to his skill to distribute play, but also to contribute in the goal scoring department. Every club wants to find a midfielder who can score double digit goals every season, and Chelsea certainly have Frank Lampard in that category. Lampard, whose talent was best utilized by Jose Mourinho in his first stint, will be playing another season under the Portuguese manager, and will be there to guide van Ginkel in case he does arrive at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho’s previous regime had an ideal blend of young talents and experienced stars, and van Ginkel would arrive as the former.

According to the Metro, van Ginkel’s agent, Karel Jansen said, “Chelsea are interested, we don’t deny it.”

“But there are more clubs. Ajax had made official contact with Vitesse, but they don’t want to talk with them.”

“The situation is that we wait until after the European Championship and then will look for the best step.”

“Marco still has two years under contract at the GelreDome, so we don’t know if he will leave Arnhem but there isn’t an agreement right now.”
