While all positions are theoretically covered, the defense is the place in which Conte is the most likely to invest. While the attack has Batshuayi and Costa and the midfield looks stronger than ever, the 3 man line in front of Courtois could use a helping hand at times not because it`s extremely hard to defend in such small numbers every 2 days or so. The large amount of games played this season and most importantly the large amount of games coming next season will put a lot of mental and physical stress on Cahill, Azpilicueta and David Luiz. With Ivanovic playing what seem to be his last games at Stamford Bridge and with Terry turning 37 next year, Conte would only have Zouma to count on. The Frenchman is good but has a lot of lost time to recover and a lot of catching up to do in terms of adapting to the new playing style.

The problem is that Chelsea are after the title this year and if they lose Ivanovic in January and have Terry back in the infirmary, things get pretty a little concerning. Titles are won through consistency and if one of the current number one picks for the defense is out things may get tougher. Add to that a handful of top notch players leave their clubs in the winter and you kind of get why it is so important to have an extra defender ready to step in. He would probably play the easier games or have a chance to make the side while Cahill or Luiz rest for example. Still it would be a lot of help to bring someone new.

According to the Daily Express, that someone new might be Niklas Sule who is currently under contract with Hoffenheim. The 21-year-old has impressed this season and has generated increased interest from Chelsea amongst others who were reported to have already made a bid before signing Luiz. Sule recently admitted he would prefer the Premier League over all others especially over Italian sides which also expressed their desire to negotiate for the center-back. The defender, despite being so young, has already made his debut for Germany and is now one of the Bundesliga’s most prized possessions. The only problem with this move is that the two are very similar and may provide Conte with a similar option. Even so, it would still be good to have Niklas Sule in the game squad in addition to Luiz.
