Chelsea have everything in their hands once again despite Conte grumbles

Chelsea have kept their hopes of a Premier League and FA Cup double alive with an astonishing 4-2 win over London rivals and Premier League title contenders Tottenham in the semi-final at Wembley over the weekend.

With the entire build up to Saturday’s semi-final surrounding the fact that this was Spurs’ chance to mentally crack Antonio Conte’s side before pushing onto a late Premier League title win, the Blues showed exactly what has got them to the top of the table, with a fine display of resilience, class and tactical nous under the arch.

With Mauricio Pochettino’s side perhaps playing the better football and twice equalising after goals from a returning Willian, Conte introduced the trio of Eden Hazard, Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas, who went about their work in a fantastic manner to blow away the north Londoners late on.

Having brushed aside any suggestions of nerves in the finest of styles, putting four past the best defence in the country, Conte’s focus quickly and firmly switched back to the Premier League.

In his post match press conference at Wembley the former Juventus and Italy boss lamented the fact that, when they face Southampton on Tuesday night at Stamford Bridge, Claude Puel’s side will have had ten days rest to their three, while closest title challenges Tottenham are afforded another day’s rest before their game against a Crystal Palace side who had to travel to Liverpool and back for their game on Sunday.

However, while Conte was far from happy with the situation, he made it clear there was nothing they can do and that they “must have the right answer on the pitch.”

Although the fixtures may seem cruel as we get to the crux of the Premier League title race, the Blues firmly have their fate in their own hands.

Conte’s side will be confident in the final against an Arsenal side they absolutely outclassed earlier in 2017 and will also be comfortable in the knowledge that, despite facing the Saints on Tuesday and having to go to Everton before the end of the season, they have the best run-in of all in the top six.

With that in mind, although there are grumbles for the Chelsea manager, the double is now well and truly in their sights and in their own hands.
