REPORT: Chelsea Goalkeeper Rumored To Joining Saudi Arabian Club ‘Soon’

Chelsea and Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is set to join Saudi Arabian outfit Al Ahli on a transfer, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

While Mendy has yet to official sign a deal, it is understood to be ‘verbally agreed’. He will join Al Ahli before the 2023/24 season commences and his new deal will last until June 2026.

In Romano’s tweet, he wrote: Edou Mendy has not signed yet with Al Ahli but it will happen soon, this week is the week for Mendy, Koulibaly and also Ziyech deals to go through. Mendy’s contract is verbally agreed for the next three years, June 2026 — as called earlier today. Kanté-Ittihad, signed.”

Mendy isn’t the only Chelsea player who will be departing the club to join the Saudi Arabian league in the summer – legendary midfielder N’Golo Kante will reportedly join Al Ittihad in the upcoming transfer window.

Will Chelsea miss Edouard Mendy?

When Mendy joined Chelsea in 2020 after the disappointing acquisition of Kepa Arrizabalaga, he looked like one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League – his raw shot-stopping ability was a consistent sight to behold.

Despite this, injuries and bouts of poor form have since rendered him a far less reliable option than he once was. Kepa, the player he was brought in to replace, has found himself in the starting lineup more often than not over the past few months.

At 31 years of age, Mendy is not getting any younger, either. Due to this, a clean break may be the best option for all parties involved.

Edouard Mendy career summary

Mendy spent time in the youth academy of Le Havre before making his debut – despite this, he never made a professional appearance for Les Ciel et Marine, joining Cherbourg in 2011.

He made just 26 Cherbourg appearances over the course of three years – as a result, he signed for Reims in 2016. He began to rise to international prominence during his time at the club.

He went on to sign for Chelsea in 2020, with whom he won the Champions League in 2021. He kept a clean sheet in the final, as the Blues defeated Manchester City by a score of 1-0.
