Chelsea given hope of landing Serie A star as contract negotiations stall

Chelsea have been given an huge boost in their pursuit of Juventus’ Daniele Rugani after reports emerged the Serie A giants have failed to agree a new contract for the defender.

Chelsea were chasing Rugani in the summer, with Blues boss Maurizio Sarri desperate to bring the 24-year-old to Stamford Bridge.

Sarri is a big fan of Rugani having worked with during his time with Empoli. Rugani spent two seasons on-loan with The Blues between 2013-2015.

However, Calciomercato now claim talks about a new deal for Rugani have stalled, opening the door for Chelsea to make their move.

Leonardo Bonucci’s return to the club has restricted Rugani’s playing time this season. The Italy international has featured just twice this season, and could now be open to leaving in order to find more regular first team action.

Rugani is also behind Giorgio Chiellini and Medhi Benatia in the defensive pecking order in Turin.

Rugani’s current deal runs until 2021.
