Chelsea Fill Youth Squad With English Talent

Chelsea fans will be delighted with the capture of their latest signing in Juan Cuadrado, but while some might be worried about the number of foreign players in the first team, the club have an action plan going in their youth teams to ensure the future of the squad is dominated by local talent, according to the Daily Mail.

Jose Mourinho had made it clear to the media that the club will not be buying any players in January unless players were shown the door. And that seems to be what happened with Germany’s World Cup winner Andre Schurrle who was sold to Wolfsburg on deadline day. Schurrle was bought by Chelsea in 2013 from Bayer Leverkusen as a winger but the emergence of Eden Hazard at the club has meant the squad revolves around the Belgian and Diego Costa in attack. Schurrle’s style never synchronised with the rest of the flair players in the squad, and only 44 appearances in two seasons called for a move. Chelsea bought Juan Cuadrado as a direct replacement, and in came another foreign player.

Chelsea’s youth teams have come into the limelight as the coaches picked 11 English players who were selected in their most recent outing. Mourinho’s concern in buying talent has been the limit to the foreign players imposed by the Premier League. The current youth team will help the first team add high profile players hopefully of local origin so as to meet the demanding regulations.
