Chelsea fans “deserve more” says Antonio Conte after Newcastle defeat

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has conceded that the club’s fans “deserve more” after yesterday afternoon’s shock defeat to Newcastle United.

The Blues’ Premier League season came to an end in the worst possible fashion as they were swept aside 3-0 at St James Park thanks to a Dwight Gayle strike and Ayoze Perez’s second-half brace.

Conte’s side still have the FA Cup final to look forward to this weekend when they take on Manchester United, however the Italian admitted his side must improve on yesterday’s performance if they are to salvage their season with victory at Wembley.

“For the next game, for sure we must change,” said Conte,  “If we think we can play a game like this in the final of the FA Cup then we don’t have a chance.

“We have six days to change our approach and desire and will to fight. I am the coach of this team and after a game like this, I am the first to answer for this bad game.”

The defeat means the Blues finished 5th in the Premier League, missing out on Champions League football the second time in three seasons.

“There was a great frustration because in our mind there was will to finish the season in the best possible way,” the former Juventus coach continued, “This time from the start we did not show the right will to finish the season in the best possible way. Newcastle outplayed us and deserved to win.

“For sure I like to play to win, and this season I did not win the title. I won three with Juventus and one with Chelsea and when I start a season I always want to win. To finish fifth is the big disappointment for me.

“We have an important game in six days and now we have to prepare in a different way than today,’ declared Conte. ‘Our fans deserve more than today.”
