There are some transfer that you simply just don’t see coming.
Nicklas Bendtner to Juventus. Paulinho to Barcelona. Thomas Graveson to Real Madrid. (yes that really happened)
Rob Green to Chelsea? Even Guillem Balague’s jaw would have dropped for this one.
The Blues announced the free transfer of the former England number one from Huddersfield Town earlier in the week – the 38-year-old penning a one-year-deal at Stamford Bridge.
“It has been a whirlwind 24 hours,” said Green following the shock move, “You are thinking about your career and where you want to go and then you get a phone call like this, and it is a short conversation.
“It has been a pretty dramatic time for me and I can’t wait to get started. I am absolutely delighted and it is a thrill and an honour to be here.”
Green arrives at The Bridge with a wealth of experience. The veteran star has over 300 Premier League appearances to his name from spells with West Ham, QPR and Norwich, and has represented England at two major tournaments.
Green’s switch to South West London however remains shrouded in mystery. New Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri is understood to have had no involvement in the transfer, and there has been suggestions the Blues brought in Green simply to fill the quota of home grown players.
Motives aside, Chelsea fans are to say the least a little surprised …
