Chelsea Fail In Second Rooney Bid

Chelsea have failed in yet another bid to sign want-away Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, as the Blues appear to be serious in their intentions to weaken their rivals by buying one of their most prized assets from recent times.

There has been no secret in the fact that Jose Mourinho has been interested in signing Rooney over the entirety of the summer transfer window. The Portuguese boss has been looking to add quality in his attacking line, with his current crop of strikers not showing form impressive enough for the manager’s liking. Chelsea are currently in the last phase of their pre-season friendlies, as they participate in the International Champions Cup, which includes clubs from Spain, Italy and England. The Blues are performing well so far, and have successfully managed to reach the final, where they face Mourinho’s former side Real Madrid.

Rooney’s future at Manchester United had always been surrounded by speculation ever since the striker submitted a second transfer request in recent times. The reason for the striker’s discontent remains unclear, as new star Robin van Persie has been seen as the perfect partner for Rooney. One reason could be the return of his former Everton boss David Moyes, who has taken over at United after the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson. Even though Moyes was responsible for handing Rooney his first Barclays Premier League start, reports have suggested friction between the two, and that the striker has not traveled with the squad to Sweden for their upcoming friendly.

The fee involved in the most recent bid is estimated to be in the region of £30 million. United have stood very firm in their response to any interest shown for Rooney’s signature. Arsenal had also been linked with a move for the England international, but do not seem in the scheme of things given Chelsea’s constant negotiations.

According to ESPN, a United spokesperson confirmed reports of a bid being received for Rooney from Chelsea.

The spokesperson said, “A bid was received yesterday and immediately rejected. Our position remains that he is not for sale.”

It looks like Rooney will have to make a big fuss if he is to force his way out of Old Trafford and whether he is prepared to try that remains to be seen.
