Chelsea eye further signings as transfer deadline looms

Antonio Conte has committed his future to Chelsea after speculation about him being unhappy with the club’s transfer dealings this summer. The boss has previously admitted he wants to make further signings in order to bolster his thinning squad, and has seemingly become quite frustrated at the club.

Conte is believed to want at lest two more signings before the transfer window shuts on Thursday, something that could be a tall order. However, whether or not Roman Abramovich’s team is able to complete further signings, the Italian has stated his commitment to Chelsea – saying that the club is working hard for new recruits.

“I’m totally committed to the club,” said Conte.

“Totally committed to improve my players and my team. I’m a coach, not a manager.”

“For sure, when you want to strengthen your squad, you have to give your opinion. Then the club goes into the transfer market to try and sort the situation. Sometimes it is possible. Sometimes it’s not possible. But I must be focused with things on the pitch and continue to work with my players.”

“The club is working very hard to try to improve our squad.”

Chelsea have made four fairly decent signings this summer in striker Alvaro Morata, midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, defender Antonio Rudiger and keeper Willy Caballero this summer — costing around £150m. But it is the way Chelsea have allowed so many players to leave that has raised eyebrows, with many writing them off as Premier contenders after just one game!

Conte though has warned that the lack of squad depth is a concern, and with Champions League football to contend with as well this season, it could become a huge issue for the club.

“Don’t forget in September we have to play seven games,” the Italian said.

“I need to rotate my players because it’s very difficult to play seven games in a month with some players.”

“I think the club is working very hard to strengthen the squad. They know very well our situation.”

Chelsea are said to be interested in signing Leicester midfielder Danny Drinkwater, Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk, Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ross Barkley, who missed yesterday’s game for Everton against Chelsea with a hamstring injury.
