Chelsea Close On Defender

Chelsea are said to be close to signing Nantes defender Papy Djilobodji. The 27-year-old played an impressive part in Nantes’ campaign last term, thus attracting attention from the likes of Celtic, Southampton, Newcastle, Leicester and Sunderland this summer.

Chelsea are also said to be chasing the Senegalese defender who stands at a huge 6ft 4in. The Blues’ defence has been slightly shaky so far this season, and Mourinho believes the centre back will help provide back-up especially as the Blues seem resigned to the fact they won’t be signing Everton defender John Stones this summer.

And according to Nantes, Djilobodji is in London undergoing a medical before signing a four-year deal at Stamford Bridge in a deal worth £ 4million. Nantes representative Franck Kita has confirmed an agreement with Chelsea for the transfer of Djilobodji, speaking to France Football.

Djilobodji has been at Nantes since 2010 and made over 160 appearances for the Ligue 1 club and has been capped at international level.

Chelsea have been linked with various central defenders so far this summer. They have had 3 bids knocked back for John Stones, as well as bids for Abdennour, who recently joined Valencia from Monaco, and PSG’s Marquinhos. Now it seems that Djilobodji, though relatively unknown, could be on his way to Stamford Bridge before Tuesday’s deadline.
