Chelsea Captain Set For Summer Exit?

Chelsea Captain Set For Summer Exit?

The 32-year-old John Terry has seen himself warming the bench ever since Rafael Benitez was appointed as Roberto Di Matteo’s successor back in November last year. Under Benitez’s control, Terry has been more of a squad player with Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill and David Luiz all in front of him in the pecking order.

The towering defender has featured in less than 15 games in the league all season, something which he has never managed in this decade. Since the 2000-01 season, he has consistently appeared in at least 20 league games. However, injuries and Benitez’s policy of rotation means he has featured in 13 league matches all season for the Blues.

There were even suggestions that club owner Roman Abramovich plans to strip Terry of his captaincy, and make David Luiz the new leader at Chelsea. The retired England international has a little more than a year left on his contract, and no talks have been initiated by the club to extend his current deal.

According to Dailymail, Galatasaray plan to take advantage of Terry’s situation at the club by making a massive bid for the Champions League winner. The report suggests that the Turkish giants are confident in securing the no-nonsense defender’s services by drawing up a three-year contract worth up to £200,000 a week.

The Turkish club spent big in the January transfer window, and acquired the likes of Wesley Sneijder and Chelsea legend Didier Drogba. They have already secured this year’s Super Lig, and believe they can convince Terry to join them next season.

Terry is reportedly aware of the interest shown by Galatasaray, who admirably bowed out to Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals, but wants to discover if he holds a future at Chelsea before making any decision.

The managerial position at Chelsea could be key in determining Terry’s future. Benitez will be departing in the summer with former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho his potential replacement. If the ‘Special One’ does indeed return, Terry may find himself once again in the thick of things with Chelsea.
