Chelsea Beat Schalke 3-0

Chelsea Beat Schalke 3-0

The Blues managed a 3-0 victory against Schalke who were just as easy to defeat as during their previous encounter. Chelsea are now almost certain of their spot in the Champions League knock-out stages and can focus on the 3 domestic competitions in which they are currently involved.

The game started out pretty well balanced just as it did back in London. Both teams played pretty aggressive football with fouls being sanctioned on several occasions. Schalke’s star player, Julian Draxler was booked just 18 minutes into the game. Nothing noticeable happened until the half hour mark, when Eto’o’s “shot” found the back of the net. The Cameroonian scored his first Champions League since moving to London after closing down Hildebrand who took too long to clear with the rebound going into the net off the clever Eto’o.

Draxler was Schalke’s most dangerous player. Fuchs also had a great chance just 4 minutes after the Blues had scored. Eto’o looked great on the pitch managing to finally get in tune with the whole team. To be fair, the Cameroonian repeatedly stated that he will need some time to accommodate to the rigours of English football and to his new team. The first half ended with a series of fouls that proved the atmosphere remained tense throughout.

The second half began with Draxler’s attempt on goal. Just like in the first part of the game, Chelsea managed to score again right after Schalke’s player missed out on a great chance. Eto’o’s second goal came and gave the Blues a comfortable lead. A lot of fouls were whistled after that and the game lost its pace. The German side struggled and Mourinho’s team turned things down a notch in order not to wear players out too much.

Schalke used up all their substitutions with 15 minutes to go until the end. They tried to score but failed on a number of times. With 8 minutes left, Demba Ba also scored a goal after the assist from Lampard. The game ended with three minutes of extra time which could not change a thing. Mourinho’s team seems to have recovered nicely after losing 2-0 to Newcastle and are now looking forward to their next fixture.
