Chelsea Are One Step Closer To Signing Havertz But There Is Still A Major Obstacle To Overcome

Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Kai Havertz is interested in moving to Chelsea, according to the Telegraph, which is a major boost to the Blues’ chances of signing the player.

The 21-year-old is said to be keen on joining up with his German international teammates Timo Werner and Antonio Rudiger, as he looks set to leave the Bundesliga.

Although Chelsea are believed to be the frontrunners, with neither Bayern Munich nor Real Madrid having the cash to fund a move for Havetz, the midfielder’s price tag remains a major obstacle.

Leverkusen are insistent that any club must match their €100m (£90m) valuation while the Blues are said to be only prepared to pay a fee in the region of £70m.

Probably the best solution to bridge this £20m gap will be to include add-ons in the deal. Leverkusen missed out on the Champions League by two points and will, therefore, be keen to bring in some money this summer.

Chelsea could well offer a certain amount upfront and pay the remaining figure in instalments and bonuses so the fee eventually rises to match their original asking price.
