Chelsea Add Yet Another Creative Attacker And Finalise Willian Signing

Well the rumours had been been out there for a week or so after it seemed that Spurs were about to sign Willian last week when the player completed a medical at White Hart Lane but it is the Blues from West London as opposed to the Whites from North London who have completed the purchase of the Brazilian attacking midfielder or winger as reported on Sky Sports News this afternoon.

Chelsea completed the purchase of Willian (full name Willian Borges da Silva) from Anzhi Makhachkala for a fee in the region of £25.5million according to Sky Sports but other sources are suggesting the fee is more like £32million – either way it is a serious amount of cash. The player will wear the number 22 shirt and has agreed to terms on a 5 year contract. Willian is 25 years old and has experience in the Champions League which Blues fans will remember as he scored twice for Shakhtar Donetsk when he was with them against Chelsea last year at Stamford Bridge in a 3-2 Chelsea win.

The move was made official today after Jose Mourinho himself attended the work permit hearing in London, making sure the player received the permit allowing him to play for Chelsea immediately and not be held up by any red-tape. This might suggest that Willian could make his debut for the Blues on Friday in the European Super Cup when they, as Europa League champions, face Champions League winners, Bayern Munich.

It is somewhat surprising to see Chelsea sign yet another creative midfielder when they already have the likes of Edden Hazard, Oscar, Frank Lampard, Juan Mata, Victor Moses, Marco Van Ginkel, Andre Schurrle and Kevin De Bruyne to choose from but I don’t think we need to worry as our manager clearly has a plan and sees the need for this strength in depth. Seemingly Willian is more of a winger and enjoys taking on and beating defenders so we can look forward to seeing him showcase his skills very soon in the Blue of Chelsea.
