Chelsea Add Another Striker With Signing Of Young Star From Ghana

Just when you thought Chelsea were finished doing business in this transfer window, Jose Mourinho and Roman Abramovich pull off another deal. Many said that Chelsea lacked quality and options at the centre forward position last season well today the Blues added yet another option when they signed the 21 year old Ghana international Christian Atsu from FC Porto.

Atsu is a versatile left-footed attacker who is equally comfortable playing on the wing or as a striker but he will not actually be available to Mourinho this season as he has immediately been sent on loan for the remainder of this season to Dutch club, Vitesse Arnheim. The fee according to Sky Sports is reported to be in the £3.5million range which is a relative bargain considering some of the recent transfer fees Chelsea have paid out.

Atsu broke into Porto’s first team squad when old Chelsea boss, Andre Villas-Boas was in charge of Porto back in 2010. The young Ghanaian won the Porto’s youth player of the year that year even though he was confined to the bench. He broke into Porto’s first team last season and also made an appearance in the knockout round of the Champions League against Malaga.

You simply cannot argue with the way Chelsea have operated in this transfer window, as they have been decisive, proactive and aggressive. They have made the Champions look indecisive with their lack of activity and as usual they are streets ahead of the red half of North London and Wenger’s attempts to buy quality players. Christian Atsu is clearly one for the future, so let’s hope his loan spell in Holland provides him with lots of football and does him as much good as Romelu Lukaku’s loan spell did for his development.
