Championship Side Targeting January Offer For Chelsea Veteran

Championship club Sheffield Wednesday are targeting a move for Chelsea defender Gary Cahill in the January transfer window, according to reports.

The 32-year-old has struggled for game time under Maurizio Sarri so far this season, falling behind Antonio Rudiger, David Luiz and Andreas Christensen in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

Cahill spoke out last week about his intention to leave the Blues in January if his playing situation doesn’t dramatically improve:

“I don’t want to jump the gun but as things stand, probably yes. Sometimes you have to make tough decisions. I did that when I was at Villa all those years ago. If I had been patient maybe I would’ve played in that first team but I wanted to take the decision to go and play regularly. As it is, I’m not enjoying things. That’s just me.”

The centre-back did come on for the final 21 minutes against West Ham on Sunday to replace the injured Rudiger, but that has been his only game time so far this campaign under the new manager.

The World Cup meant that Cahill returned late for pre-season, and the player feels that has set back his chances of first-team action. However, after having not made the bench for all but one Premier League game this season, he may feel an exit from the club is inevitable.
