Cech Set To Stay At Chelsea

The Czech international was a surprise name in a list of six goalkeepers Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is reportedly tracking in order to replace current number one, Wojciech Szczesny, at the Emirates for next season.

Wenger has been disillusioned with Szczesny’s performances and has replaced him with Fabianski for the Gunners last two matches and was rewarded with two clean sheets. However, he doesn’t view Fabianski as a long-term replacement and was set to attempt a raid on London rivals Chelsea for Cech.

However, any possible move has been rejected by Cech who has comprehensively suggested that he can’t even imagine moving to Arsenal. Cech has been quoted by Metro, saying, “It is an interesting piece of news but it is such speculation that I think it’s not even necessary to comment on it. I know of nothing, nobody has contacted me and, to be honest, I can’t even imagine it.”

The 30-year-old is currently in his ninth season with Chelsea and has remained the first choice keeper throughout his tenure with the Blues. He has won the Golden Glove award twice and signed a new long-term contract last May which is set to keep him at Stamford Bridge till at least 2016.

However, Cech has never been significantly challenged for the number one position. But, this could change in the summer as on loan Chelsea goalie, Thibaut Courtois, is set to return to Stamford Bridge from his two year spell with Atletico Madrid.

Courtois signed from Genk in the summer of 2011 on a five-year deal but was immediately sent on loan to get some first team experience. He chose to extend his stay at Madrid by another year to continue has development and has made some giant strides in his progress.

He has already equalled his clean sheet tally of last season with 15 and also set a new record for the longest time elapsed without conceding a goal at the Vicente Calderon by not letting the opposition score for 820 minutes.

The 20-year-old has merited a chance to compete to start at Chelsea and with the Blues set to name a new manager in the summer following Benitez’s departure, he may have to make a decision between Courtois and Cech as his first choice goalkeeper.
