Cavani or Gomez? Who Should Chelsea Target?

Chelsea are really short of options upfront, with only two recognized strikers on the books at the moment, the much-maligned Fernando Torres and January recruit from Newcastle United, Demba Ba. Both have failed to register even 10 Premier League goals between them, with their poor showing in the league prompting owner Abramovich to dig in his deep pockets.

Torres is widely expected to be sold to make way for new additions. With a new striker more or less guaranteed at the Bridge next season, rumours are abound with which striker will head to London in the summer.

Neymar and Cavani have consistently been linked with the Champions League winners, but it seems the latter is favourite to join the Blues after hinting that he would consider leaving Napoli. However, Napoli president has insisted that his star striker is not for sale and slapped an astonishing £60 million price tag on the player.

And according to DailyMail, Chelsea have now shifted their attention to out-of-favour Bayern Munich forward, Mario Gomez. Gomez has lost his place in the side to his namesake Mario Mandzukic, who has shone in attack during his absence with an ankle injury.

The 27-year-old Gomez amassed an incredible 41 goals in 52 appearances last season and is frustrated with his lack of playing time this season. Guardiola is set to take over the reins from Heynckes in the summer, but Gomez’s situation will reportedly not change as the former Barcelona manager will be willing to listen to offers for him.

That could be a big boost for Chelsea, who are in desperate need of a prolific striker. Cavani would no doubt be a quality signing, but it could lead to a protracted transfer saga with their president intent on keeping his star asset. Gomez, on the other hand, might be willing to move to a big club like Chelsea, who are ready to offer him first-team football.

Who do you think could shine with the Blues? Will it be Napoli hero Cavani or the German Gomez?
