Cancelo is a signing that would drastically improve Chelsea’s position

Chelsea have endured a difficult summer which has been plagued by a wealth of departures from Stamford Bridge, overshadowing the fine business the Blues have done to capture the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Alvaro Morata.

Antonio Conte has been very public in his quest to land further additions before the transfer window slams shut at the end of August and it’s likely to be a rollercoaster ride for fans in the final weeks of the window, as the Blues will inevitably be linked with a wealth of names.

It will certainly be difficult for fans to distinguish which links are genuine and which are mere tabloid gossip but the Blues should certainly be pursuing one of the names linked with Chelsea this week; Valencia full-back Joao Cancelo.

The 23-year-old Portuguese international is one of the finest young wide defenders in European football and his ability on the right-hand side would be a significant upgrade on Victor Moses, though the Nigerian would still have a part to play.

An attack-minded defender, Cancelo would thrive in Conte’s 3-4-3 formation and could develop into one of the finest players in the Premier League, establishing himself as a key-part of the side, whilst also increasing the depth Chelsea have in their ranks as Moses would likely continue to make a number of appearances.

Cancelo is certainly a better alternative to another Blues target, Paris Saint-Germain’s Ivorian full-back Serge Aurier, as the African ace arrives with plenty of baggage- namely the question marks as to whether he’d actually be allowed to enter the United Kingdom following a court case in France.

With Cancelo, Chelsea would encounter none of the problems they could come across if they were to land Aurier and Conte would be the perfect manager for a young player like the Portuguese ace to work under.

It could leave Chelsea with a very impressive back-line consisting of Cancelo, Gary Cahill, David Luiz, Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta, with Marcos Alonso, Moses and Andreas Christensen ready to step-in when required.

The Blues may still feel they lack central options though, which is something Conte will need to address, but it doesn’t change the fact that Cancelo would be a spectacular addition to Chelsea’s squad.
